Sexually Transmitted Disease [STD]

There are several sexually transmitted diseases known today. Some of these are curable and few are not. For this discussion, Syphilis is selected as the topic. It is one sexually transmitted disease that is curable as well.

Syphilis is a disease caused by the bacterium Treponema Pallidum. This disease is contracted through sexual intercourse or even through ‘kissing’. This is because in both cases there is an exchange of internal body fluids. The symptoms of the disease begin to show up anywhere between 10 and 90 days (STD Prevention, 2004).

Aside from the typical ‘penny sized rashes that appear on the hands and feet, rashes may also appear as prickly heat, small blotches all over the body, a bad case of old acne, etc. Other signs that may show up include moist warts in the groin region or pus-filled swellings that look like ‘chicken pox’. These symptoms last for 2-6 weeks. Fever, perforated lymph glands, sore throat, hair loss, headaches, fatigue, etc. are also known to be some of the symptoms (STD Prevention, 2004).

In the next stage the bacterium begins destroying the internal organs; the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones, and joints. The latter part of this stage includes symptoms such as failure of coordination in muscle movements, paralysis, numbness, gradual blindness, dementia, and other severe changes to the individual.

It is easy to cure this disease in its early stages with the use of an intramuscular injection of penicillin, which is an antibiotic. For individuals that have had this disease for longer periods, the number of doses of this antibiotic is greater. Bicillin, a type of penicillin (G benzathine) is the antibiotic that is used. Those individuals that are allergic to ‘penicillin’ can also be treated by alternative drugs (Syphilis Information, 2004).

In order to prevent this disease from spreading, those individuals suffering with syphilis are advised to indulge in sexual activity. During treatment as well the same is advised. Preventing promiscuous behavior is also advised. In addition to this, if one happens to be involved in more than one sexual relationship, s/he is advised with the use of latex sheaths.
